Introduction

Poet in Motion: Selections from the Kurt Boone Papers explores the creative life and archival collection of poet, author, urban culturalist, and longtime foot messenger Kurt Boone. Moving between notebooks and finished poems, photographs and publications, messenger culture and Black literary communities, the exhibition traces the many worlds that meet within Boone’s papers.

Rather than separating the writer from the messenger, or the poet from the documentarian, Poet in Motion considers how these practices inform one another. Boone’s archive reveals a creative life shaped by movement through the city, sustained by community, and documented across manuscript, image, object, and ephemera.

Drawn from selections in the Kurt Boone Papers, the exhibition offers a view into both Boone’s individual practice and the cultural networks surrounding it.
